June update

It’s been a busy month and I haven’t had a chance to blog about what I’ve been up to but I’ve been kept on my toes and it’s been…..interesting! At the tail end of last month, I did some work on the new Vic Reeves sitcom for BBC2 (Hebburn) and this month I’ve started photographing for Sky and got a chance to work on Ashley Banjo’s Secret Dance Crew (for Sky 1) and A Gypsy Life for Me (for the Bio channel). I returned to MediaCityUK Studios earlier in the month for a photo shoot and unit stills on Alesha Dixon’s Street Dance Stars (for CBBC) and photographed the first birthday of The Greenhouse (at MediaCityUK) and a corporate event for Direct Line (via the brilliant Jon Parker Lee).

Writing-wise, I heard from the organisers of the Red Planet Prize and unfortunately the script I entered didn’t make it into the semi-finals (see my blogs here and here). It did, however, make it into the top 25 of just under 2000 entries, so I’m very happy and keen to develop several ideas I’ve been procrastinating about.

The summer’s looking busy, keen to look onwards and upwards. I quit my full-time job at The Pie Factory, MediaCityUK earlier this year to pursue my photographic work full-time and work on my screenwriting, so keen to follow through with that ambition.

If you’re still reading this…..thank you 😉

Comedy Conference 2011 – Lowry Theatre

On October 12th I photographed the first ever Comedy Conference in Salford Quays. It was in the Compass Room of The Lowry, a beautiful setting overlooking MediaCityUK which, as I write, is getting busier and busier with more BBC staff. Coronation Street will be moving to the site in 2012 while The University of Salford is already open to students. It’s exciting times for the North West.

The Comedy Conference brought together commissioners, performers, producers and executives to discuss comedy issues, such as new platforms for comedy material and how to nurture up-and-coming talent. It was the perfect precursor to the BBC’s Comedy Showcase which I will be blogging about in the week. One point that struck a chord with me came from the final debate of the day, titled “This time next year we’ll be millionaires”. The panel, chaired by Kenton Allen, consisted of Ash Atalla, Damon Beesley and James Corden. During the course of discussion it became apparent that the origins of shows the panel had been involved with had come about organically (The Office, The InBetweeners & Gavin and Stacey). That is to say they were not written to fulfil a finanical or commercial need but were written because the minds behind those shows really wanted to write them. It’s a sweet irony, then, that they are some of the most successful British television shows of all time.

The featured speakers were:

  • Peter Salmon (BBC, Director of the North)
  • Maureen Walker (Vision+Media)
  • John Bishop
  • Cheryl Taylor (BBC)
  • Shane Allen (C4)
  • Elaine Bedell (ITV)
  • Lucy Lumsden (SKY)
  • Danny Cohen (BBC)
  • Jimmy Mulville (Hat Trick)
  • Saurabh Kakkar (ITV)
  • Henry Normal (Baby Cow)
  • Nigel Walley (Decipher)
  • Edd Southerden (Hypernaked)
  • Ben Cavey (Tiger Aspect)
  • Nerys Evans (C4)
  • Mark Freeland (BBC)
  • Kenton Allen (Big Talk)
  • Ash Atalla (Rough Cut)
  • Damon Beesley (Bwark)
  • James Corden

Below are a selection of photos taken during the course of the conference. Big thank you to Janette Murphy, Nick Astor and Janet Shaw.

The Greenhouse – MediaCityUK

At the end of March I snapped the opening of The Greenhouse at MediaCityUK, a brand new office complex offering short term leases. I’d describe the offices as light, modern and slick with a fantastic design by Drumbeat Creative featuring some playful symbolism.

If you’re signed up to the official MediaCityUK newsletter you would have received an e-mail newsletter earlier in the week. Here’s the official blurb with my snaps below. The Greenhouse will open for business soon. Keep the official Greenhouse website bookmarked for more info.

Representatives from over 200 companies attended the open day which allowed the potential new tenants to look around the space, as well as meet members of the MediaCityUK team and a selection of exhibitors, who provided guests with a feel for the MediaCityUK community.

Exhibitors who attended:

Booths – Booths were on hand with wine, cheese and beer to give guests a taste of what’s to come when they open their new food store at MediaCityUK this autumn.

Dental – Dental at MediaCityUK made their first appearance as the new MediaCityUK practice. Husband and wife team Hitesh Panchal and Deepa Vakil will be offering experienced dentistry and cosmetic services in a new state-of-the-art clinic for those who live and work at MediaCityUK.

MediaCityUK Technology – MediaCityUK’s technology team gave a full demonstration of the high speed technology offering at The Greenhouse.

Living – Peel Living spoke to guests about the 400 apartments based at MediaCityUK, only a stone’s throw away from The Greenhouse.

BBC North | The University of Salford | Holiday Inn | Esporta Gym | Public Sector Partnerships – Guests were able to talk to some of their potential new neighbours.

Special thanks:

  • Dragonfly – who knitted out a few of the new offices, breakout spaces and meeting rooms with a selection of unique furniture;
  • DJ’s Joe and Olly who set the ambiance;
  • Cherub Cupcakes for their selection of yummy cakes
