BBC3 – The Adult Season – Small Teen Big World

On May 28th 2010, I photographed for Nine Live Media’s Small Teen Big World, a programme for BBC3′s Adult Season. Got to spend the day in beautiful North Wales, with a small intimate crew documenting 16-year-old Jasmine Burkitt and her mum Bev. The show airs on July 27th on BBC3 at 9pm. Here’s a breakdown of the show from the BBC’s website:

Being a teenager is tough, but for 16-year-old Jasmine Burkitt it is even harder, because she is just 3’8″ tall and only fits clothes designed for a seven to eight-year-old.

The 12 months captured in this documentary are the most important of Jasmine’s life so far. She goes to New York to meet others with similar genetic conditions; camps out at her first pop festival; celebrates her sixteenth birthday and tries to contact her estranged father who is average size. Unexpected events in this engaging teenager’s life make this a compelling film.

Here’s a clip from the show:

Big thank you to Kate Deadman, Kerry Brierley, Cat Lewis, Jas, Bev, Naomi and Ray for a brilliant day.

HFMA Summer Ball

On July 2nd, I photographed a summer ball event for the HFMA at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester; a beautiful opulent hotel that I was very impressed by although when asked if I could photograph an exterior of the hotel for the event, I was told by a security guard that I would need two weeks written notice to do so. Hmmmm. Had a wonderful evening though, photographing in a lovely intimate venue for some lively happy smiley people. I alternated between taking reportage-style shots and hi-key “studio” shots with my portable set-up. Big thank you to Karen Foster. As ever, I hope you like the photographs.

Wedding Reception – Midland Hotel

I photographed a wedding reception for Nicola and Darrell at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on Saturday night. It was a great night, good vibe, good people, was great to be a part of the celebrations. In the midst of photo editing, intrigue got the better of me and I read up about the hotel. Opened in 1903 by Midland Railway to serve Manchester Central railway station, the hotel has seen its fair share of high-profile visitors, or so Wikipedia tells me:

The Midland is perhaps most famous for being the meeting place of Charles Stewart Rolls and Frederick Henry Royce leading to the formation of Rolls-Royce Limited in 1906. More recent celebrity stays include Paul McCartney, the Spice Girls, the Beckhams, George Best, Tom Jones, Luciano Pavarotti, Mike Tyson, Jennifer Lopez, Prince Edward, the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, current Prime Minister Gordon Brown and David Cameron. The Beatles were famously refused access to the French Restaurant for being “inappropriately dressed”.[3][4] Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother dined in what was the Trafford Restaurant in November 1959 after attending a Royal Variety Performance at the Palace Theatre. It was the first time a crowned head had dined in a public restaurant.

A truly iconic Mancunian hotel. Hope you like the photos.
